Gum disease is an infection caused by bacteria. Normally, everyone
has certain amount of bacteria in the mouth. However, the normal
amount can grow and form plaque and tartar around the teeth. This
excessive amount then results in progressive disease known as gum
disease. Many factors such as hereditary, diet, smoking, and body
chemistry can contribute to the disease process. In most cases,
gum disease is painless until it becomes very severe.
Gingivitis: Gingivitis is a condition resulted from inflammation
of the gums. It has symptoms such as redness, bleeding, and swelling
of the gums. However, bone has not been affected at this stage.
Periodontal Disease: Periodontal disease is actual bone loss due
to disease process caused by bacteria. If not treated, the disease
process will continue. Severe periodontal can result in mobile teeth
and eventual loss of the teeth. Again, the disease is usually painless
until later stages.
